The Narrative Architect: The Voice in the Cockpit

(EI & Relationship Mastery Newsletter – Season 7, Article 1)

Good afternoon.

Pull up a chair and pour yourself a coffee. Today is a big day.

For the past few seasons, we’ve talked extensively about how to handle external chaos. We’ve looked at mediating boardroom battles, managing team burnout, and raising resilient kids (if you’ve read DISCerning Parenting, you know how passionate I am about family ecosystems). We’ve spent a lot of time looking outward at how we interact with the world.

But this week, we are pivoting.

Welcome to Season 7: The Narrative Architect.

Over the next ten weeks, we are going inside. As a Mindset Coach, I can give you every leadership tactic, communication hack, and conflict resolution strategy in the book. But here is the brutal truth: If the story you tell yourself about who you are is broken, none of those external tools will work.

Before you can change your team, your culture, or your family dynamics, you have to rewrite the protagonist. You have to edit your internal operating system.

Today, we are starting with the most critical narrative of all: the voice inside your head. We are stepping into the cockpit.

The Cliché: “You’re Just Too Quiet”

If you are an introverted leader, you have likely carried a specific label around for most of your life. Someone—a well-meaning teacher, a loud boss, or a corporate culture obsessed with extroversion—handed you a script.

The script said: “You are too quiet. You lack executive presence. You need to speak up more if you want to be a real leader.”

If you hear a script enough times, you don’t just believe it. You internalise it. It becomes the voice in your head.

Think of your mind as the cockpit of a commercial airliner. You are the pilot trying to navigate the turbulence of your daily life. But there is a co-pilot sitting right next to you—your internal narrator.

If your internal narrator is constantly reading the instruments through a lens of deficiency—whispering, “You aren’t charismatic enough to run this meeting,” or “They aren’t listening to you because you’re too soft-spoken”—you will inevitably crash the plane. It doesn’t matter if the engines (your skills) are perfectly fine. The story in the cockpit dictates the reality of the flight.

The Solution: NLP and the Power of Framing

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), there is a foundational concept called Framing.

Framing is the understanding that the meaning of any event or trait is entirely dependent on the “frame” you put around it. If you put a picture of a beautiful landscape in a cheap, cracked, plastic frame, it looks like junk. If you put the exact same picture in a gilded museum frame, it looks like a masterpiece.

Your quietness is the picture. The story you tell yourself about it is the frame.

When your internal narrator says, “I am too quiet,” you are using a deficit frame. You are defining yourself by what you lack (noise, volume, bluster). When you operate from a deficit frame, your nervous system responds with anxiety. You try to mask your true self. You fake extroversion, which burns through your energy reserves and leaves you exhausted.

As Narrative Architects, we don’t try to change the picture. We change the frame.

We shift from a deficit frame to a resourceful state.

You are not “too quiet.” You are calibrated.

Let that new frame sit in the cockpit for a moment.

When you reframe your introversion as calibration, you completely change your relationship to your own leadership. A calibrated instrument doesn’t make noise just to prove it is turned on. It takes in data, processes it deeply, and only outputs a signal when it is highly accurate and strictly necessary.

Loud leaders are often uncalibrated. They react to everything. They fill the silence because they are terrified of it.

You do not lack presence. You are simply practicing precision. When you finally rewrite that internal script, you stop fighting your nature. You drop the heavy armour of pretending to be someone else, and you step into your authentic, quiet power.

The Experiential Lab: The Red Pen Audit

We are moving from information to transformation. Starting this season, every newsletter will end with a physical, experiential exercise. Reading about a concept is nice, but doing the work is how we actually rewrite the neural pathways.

This week’s lab is called “The Red Pen Audit.”

Here is your assignment for the next 24 hours:

  1. Track the Co-Pilot: Keep a small notebook on your desk or open a dedicated note on your phone. For one full day, simply observe the voice in the cockpit. Every time your internal narrator feeds you a limiting script about your leadership style (e.g., “I should have spoken over him,” “I’m too passive,” “I don’t have the energy for this”), write it down word-for-word. Do not judge it. Just act as a stenographer.
  2. The Red Pen Edit: Tonight, sit down with your list. Take out a literal red pen (or a different font color). Cross out the limiting belief.
  3. Draft the Resourceful State: Rewrite the sentence using a calibrated, resourceful frame.

You hold the pen. The story of your leadership is yours to edit.

Welcome to Season 7. I’m incredibly excited to build this with you.

Until next week, keep your instruments calibrated.
